In today’s blog I would like to introduce you to the Swedish company Johanson. Johanson stands for quality, sustainability and a wide range of colours. With their versatile furniture, they are the perfect choice for almost any work environment.
For more than 60 years, Johanson has been producing furniture for the contract sector and has always had a strong focus on quality and environmental protection. They are even ISO 14001 certified and meet the demanding Swedish Möbelfakta guidelines. In addition, their products meet the highest EU standards for testing and stability in public spaces.
Johanson combines the know-how of some of Europe’s best designers with their long tradition of craftsmanship from Småland. The result is unique pieces of furniture with a special style and character.
The story behind Johanson
We start with the story behind Johanson. Let’s take a look behind the scenes.
1953: The beginnings
In 1953, Johanson Design’s journey began with the founding of the upholstery workshop Bröderna Johansons Fåtöljindustri. Here, the first product was created, a seat stool made of imitation leather, which became famous all over Sweden with its unique star-shaped pattern of triangles.

The 1960s: The Rise of Venus
The 1960s brought forth the iconic Venus egg-shaped armchair, which became one of the absolute bestsellers in Johanson Design’s furniture range. To this day, Venus is a popular element in bars, restaurants, nightclubs, offices and private homes.

1972: New momentum
After a few years of weaker sales, Börje Johanson and his brothers managed to get the business going again. In 1972, the company moved to more modern premises with a state-of-the-art production facility.
1990: Changes and successes
In the 1990s, brothers Dan and Paul took over Johanson Design. They recognised the need to reform distribution methods and began collaborating with external designers. This collaboration led to the creation of popular products such as the Sputnik bar stool and the cult Snaps bar stool.

2000s: Further successes
The 2000s brought collaboration with designer Alexander Lervik, whose Cuba armchair and Studio chair became great successes. During this time, Johanson Design relocated to spacious corporate offices, which were later expanded to include 13,000 square metres of warehouse space.
Continuing its commitment to a more sustainable future, Johanson Design moved into new showrooms in Stockholm. The company now cooperates with several top designers and received the European environmental symbol “EU Ecolabel” for its Pelican chair series.

Pelican – the first chair with the “EU Ecolabel”
Pelican is the first chair in Sweden to proudly carry the European eco-label “EU Ecolabel”. The chair was designed by Johan Lindstén. The idea of creating a stackable chair with maximum seating comfort and recycled materials had been waiting a long time for its realisation. In the spring of 2020, this vision became reality with the release of the Pelican model. This elegant chair with gentle lines is made entirely of recycled plastic.
Pelican is available in many versions and can be used in a variety of ways, both in modern working concepts and in the living area. It is available as a variant with castors, wooden legs, upholstered and even configured as a bar chair.

Multicolour – the world of colour from Johanson
Johanson Design proudly presents its unique colour concept, Multicolour. This makes it possible to perfectly match the corporate identity (CI) of any company and always have the right colour variant at hand. With a selection of more than 405 RAL colours for frames and metal parts as well as a wide range of fabrics, the company is prepared for any colour challenge.
Johanson Design’s impressive colour palette includes all 195 RAL colours. You can choose between solid colours (gloss 72) and textured finishes with an elegant matt surface. In addition, 15 RAL colours with pearlescent finishes and chrome are available.
