A visit to HAY – design, inspiration and sustainable innovation

When it comes to modern, Scandinavian design, you can’t go past HAY. The Danish brand stands for clean lines, high functionality and a flair for timeless aesthetics.

Our visit to the HAY showroom in Munich was the perfect opportunity to discover the latest collections and allow our new colleague to immerse herself directly in the world of HAY.

HAY Showroom Munich

The HAY showroom is located on Siegesstraße in Munich – a place where design meets functionality. Here you will find everything a designer’s heart desires: from iconic pieces of furniture to innovative solutions for modern working environments.

In a relaxed atmosphere – and with an excellent coffee and croissants – we were able to immerse ourselves in the HAY universe and be inspired by the latest collections.

Our highlights in the HAY showroom

Arbour Sofa – design follows construction

Design by Andreas Engesvik & Daniel Rybakken
The Arbour Sofa collection was developed with the idea that design should follow construction. Each element of this sofa is manufactured separately and then joined together, resulting in a clearly defined shape with high seating comfort. The solid wooden frame creates an architectural contrast to the soft, organic upholstery. The collection includes two- and three-seaters, the compact Arbour Club Sofa and the Arbour Armchair, all available in EU Ecolabel-certified fabrics.

Dorso armchair – movement inspires the design

Design by GamFratesi
Inspired by the flowing movements of a human torso, the Dorso armchair combines a gently curved shape with a swivelling base. These features make it not only particularly comfortable, but also functional. Its compact size and high level of comfort make it perfect for conference rooms, lounges or as an elegant accent in private rooms.

Outdoor collection – Perfect balance between design & function

The Palissade series is one of HAY’s best-known outdoor collections. Its geometric design integrates into both urban and natural environments and offers durable, weatherproof furniture with a timeless look.

With Palissade Cord, HAY presents a completely new interpretation of the well-known Palissade series. Instead of the classic steel struts, recycled polyester rope is woven by hand around the powder-coated steel frame.

The Palissade Cord version has a softer, more dynamic look and provides a comfortable seating experience. The construction remains robust and durable, ideal for use in gardens, on terraces, balconies or in outdoor areas of cafés and restaurants.

The colour concept has been carefully coordinated: The cords are colour-coordinated with the steel frame, creating an elegant, monochrome appearance. Thanks to the material, the cord version offers a breathable, flexible seat that moulds easily to the body while remaining weatherproof.

Novelties: Pyro, Woody, X-Line Chair & Palissade Cord

Pyro Coffee Table – elegance through material diversity

Design by Sylvain Willenz
The Pyro Coffee Table is a versatile side table that is characterised by its clear, balanced design language. The designer has been strongly inspired by material research and ceramics. The striking design combines a high-gloss glazed ceramic top in three different colours with a matt steel base in black or white. Pyro blends seamlessly into a wide variety of indoor and outdoor areas and combines minimalism with graphic expressiveness.

Woody – From storage shelf to design icon

Design by HAY Studio
Originally designed as practical storage furniture, the Woody shelving unit was included in commercial sales due to high demand. Its beauty lies in its open, minimalist design, which deliberately shows screw fittings and connecting elements. Woody is available in several sizes and can stand freely in the room, be placed against the wall or used as a room divider.

X-Line Chair – Minimalism meets the art of engineering

Design by Niels Jørgen Haugesen (1970s), new edition by HAY
The X-Line Chair is a prime example of the high-tech design of the 1970s. Danish designer Niels Jørgen Haugesen, who collaborated with Arne Jacobsen, designed this chair to intelligently combine function and construction. The result is a minimalist, well thought-out X-shaped structure made of thin tubular steel, which makes the chair light, stable and flexible.

HAY has relaunched the X-Line Chair with new colours and materials, making it suitable for indoor and outdoor use. ‘It’s one of the most intelligent designs to come out of Denmark – so minimal and yet so functional,’ says Rolf Hay, co-founder of HAY.

HAY & sustainability – design with responsibility

HAY pursues a consistently sustainable approach to design and production. Many products are made from recycled or FSC-certified materials. The company favours sustainable, durable construction that is not only functional but also conserves resources.

The Arbour sofa series is an example of this approach: it is made from certified materials and has a modular design so that individual components can be replaced instead of replacing the entire piece of furniture. The Palissade Cord collection also shows how sustainable innovation can be integrated into design – with recycled polyester rope as the core element
