The DNA of Thonet furniture extends far beyond its functionality – it has the power to transform spaces and create emotions. From inspiring work environments to inviting public spaces, Thonet’s timeless designs shape the atmosphere and leave a lasting impression.
In today’s blog, we want to take a closer look at the Thonet company and the impact of its products.
More about Thonet: The union of tradition and innovation
Thonet furniture is not just furniture; it is a timeless companion that shapes spaces and is firmly anchored in our everyday culture. In a constantly changing world of work, offices have taken on a new function as meeting places, and this is where Thonet picks up on its roots in the 19th century.
Founded by Michael Thonet, a cabinetmaker and builder, the company opened its first workshop in Boppard am Rhein in 1819. Even then, he began to research and utilise innovative woodworking techniques. The company’s history took off in Vienna when Michael Thonet founded a branch in the Austrian capital in 1849. Under the name Gebrüder Thonet, the company quickly became known for its revolutionary furniture made of bent wood, in particular the famous chair no. 14, later known as chair 214.
Thonet’s story began in the coffee house culture of the 19th century and has since spread to wherever people gather, communicate and spend time together. From the unique bentwood furniture to the iconic tubular steel classics, Thonet has significantly influenced furniture design and has become a cultural symbol.
Today’s Thonet furniture builds on this heritage, offering contemporary interpretations of classic pieces through collaborations with renowned designers. The ongoing development of the collection shows that Thonet not only preserves tradition, but also meets the needs of the new working world and its challenges.
A key focus here is on sustainable production. Thonet is increasingly focussing on resource conservation and environmentally conscious manufacturing processes, without neglecting the quality and aesthetic value of its products. Much of the workmanship is carried out by hand.
Furniture that characterises rooms
Thonet furniture is not just furniture in offices – it shapes environments that go far beyond functional workstations. Their designs symbolise safety and tranquillity, fundamental needs in the constantly changing world of work. They have the ability to shape spaces, arouse emotions and create a timeless and inspiring atmosphere.
The use of furniture ranges from classic offices to modern coworking spaces and always creates an atmosphere that combines inspiration and comfort. Thonet furniture is therefore not just an addition to offices, but rather a design solution that transforms working environments into spaces of engagement and inspiration.
